Welcome from the Vestry of St. John's Church
We welcome you to St. John’s Parish and Church, on the corner of Palisade and 16th Street, Union City, NJ (behind the big giraffe). We worship every Sunday at 10:30am, (9:30 am July through August) with Sunday school at the same time. During Lent and Advent we also have Evensong (evening worship) on Thursday evenings, followed by Christian Education.
The parish began as a group of Sunday worshipers who met in McRae’s silk factory in the city, then known as West Hoboken. St. John’s is one of the two oldest congregations in town. Our first church was built in 1848 (at 11th Street and New York Avenue). The cornerstone of the present church (at 16th Street and Palisade Avenue) was laid on October 6, 1901. The rectory was built in 1909 and the large parish house in 1923. In its long history, over 26 clergy have served St. John’s Church.
St. John’s is active in serving the larger community of Union City, Weehawken, and northern Jersey City through our programs. Our children’s programs include the Puerta Abierta After School Program and Camp Unity Summer Arts Day Camp. Our arts ministry is growing with “Celebrate Art”, our fall art show, and “Arts and Activism”, our spring arts and education outreach.
Social activities at St. John’s include:
X Tween events and trips for kids between eight and twelve.
X Parish Fun Nights
X Champaign Suppers after the Christmas Eve and Easter Vigil services
X St. John’s Guild High Teas (three times a year)
X St John’s Guild Yankee Auctions (twice a year)
X Poetry readings
X Service events at the local shelter
(See "Programs" for more information)
We hope you will visit our little parish. Our goal is abundant life. So take some time to “come share the peace”.
